What is a Comprehensive School Counseling Program?
The American School Counseling Association states that "A comprehensive school counseling program is an integral component of the school’s academic mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on standards in academic, career and personal/social development, promote and enhance the learning process for all students. Effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, parents and other educators to create an environment that promotes student achievement. Staff and school counselors value and respond to the diversity and individual differences in our societies and communities. Comprehensive school counseling programs ensure equitable access to opportunities and rigorous curriculum for all students to participate fully in the educational process" (ASCA National Model, 2019).
Social-Emotional Learning & Classroom Lessons
Social-emotional learning is helping students develop self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for success in school, work, and everyday life. Each month, as part of our SEL program, I meet with our students during one of their activity classes for classroom counseling. I absolutely LOVE classroom counseling and the opportunity to spend time with the students!! We address important topics such as taking responsibility, being productive in the classroom and outside of the classroom, showing empathy and sympathy for others and viewing others' perspectives, etc, etc. =)
Individual & Small Group Counseling
Students can meet with me individually to address specific needs, or in a small group setting. Individual sessions vary in topics, however one thing is consistent- confidentiality!
It is my ethical obligation to maintain student confidentiality by not disclosing of any information provided to me during sessions unless the child is in danger of being hurt or hurting others, or unless they give me permission to share what we discuss.
Small group counseling sessions vary in number and in topics. These sessions allow me to work together with a group of students and address similar needs. These groups will most often meet for a number of sessions spread across several weeks, based on students' needs.
Some examples of small group counseling topics are:
study habits, self-esteem, anger management, anxiety, divorce, grief, social skills, etc.
